A key piece of Long Island Sound legislation took an important step toward reauthorization when the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved S.3119, the Long Island Sound Stewardship and Restoration Act on June 30th. The legislation, enacted in 2000, authorizes up to $40 million in funding each year for water quality improvements in the Sound and will now also authorize up to $25 million in annual funding for stewardship in the Sound.
The Senate bill incorporates a number of provisions initially raised by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Audubon worked closely with Senators Lieberman and Gillibrand on language bringing the Senate and House versions closer together, and clearing the way for fast-track approval of the bill later this year. The bill was considered among a number of other similar bills supporting restoration of Great Waters nationwide.
