In a surprise move, Governor M. Jodi Rell announced July 7th that she is recommending release of $11.25 million in previously approved state bond funding for Connecticut's two state open space programs. $6.25 million will go to the state's Recreation and Natural Heritage Trust Fund used by DEP to acquire open space lands. $5 million will go toward local open space acquisition under DEP's Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program. Once approved, this $5 million in funding will be combined with approximately $5 million generated through the Community Investment Act to fund the current state open space grant round that closed May 3rd. DEP has received more than 40 applications from cities, towns, non profits and water companies for these funds, including one submitted for the Griswold Airport property in Madison. The State Bond Commission, meeting July 13th, must approve release of these funds.
